We have recorded and produced these videos to allow households, families and individuals to safely venture outdoors after watching the introduction video and a hike tour of a specific Open Space trail. These hikes range from about 2-3 hours, depending on your pace. We ask that you respect the trails and wellbeing of others by following trail direction signs and guidelines posted at trailheads. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water and a snack. For more information, please contact ECOSLO at 805-544-1777 or by email at programs@ecoslo.org.

See you on the trails!

This month: Stay Safe in the Heat
Summer is often a beautiful time to get outdoors and hike, however it can also be very warm and it is important to know how to stay safe. If you are not prepared for exercising in high temperatures, you can experience heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Precautions you can take to ensure an enjoyable and relaxing hiking experience include:

  • Researching hikes that have shade throughout the trail to take a break and cool off in

  • Applying sunscreen prior to going outdoors

  • Wearing a hat and bringing a bandana to keep you cool

  • Wearing clothes that wick moisture away from the body

  • Bringing plenty of water and also drinking electrolytes

  • Hike during cooler times of day in the mornings and around sunset

Take these preventative measures and also postpone a hike if temperatures are extreme. The trails will always be there so your safety is the upmost importance! To learn more about hiking safety visit the American Hiking Society website below.
