We have recorded and produced these videos to allow households, families and individuals to safely venture outdoors after watching the introduction video and a hike tour of a specific Open Space trail. These hikes range from about 2-3 hours, depending on your pace. We ask that you respect the trails and wellbeing of others by following trail direction signs and guidelines posted at trailheads. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water and a snack. For more information, please contact ECOSLO at 805-544-1777 or by email at programs@ecoslo.org.

See you on the trails!

This Month:
Hiking Checklist

This holiday season we made wishlists, to-do lists, and bucket-lists for the New Year. One list you may not have thought of is a hiking checklist to ensure a safe and adventurous 2022. We made a list for you and checked it twice, we hope it supports you on your upcoming trails!

  • Plenty of water: and extra in case your hike takes longer than expected

  • Sun protection: a hat, sunscreen, SPF shirt or neck cloth

  • A snack: and extra food in case your hike takes longer than expected

  • Extra clothes: a layer in case it gets cold, socks or an extra shirt in case yours gets wet

  • First aid kit: for any unforeseen circumstance, include bandages and cleaning materials

  • Light: bring a headlamp or flashlight in case your day hike turns to night

  • Fire: having a fire starter or lighter can provide warmth if you find yourself stuck and can also act as a signal for help

  • Navigation: a GPS and satellite messenger are great help for trails you are unfamiliar with and that are located outside of service zones

  • Shelter: a small emergency blanket can save your life when you find yourself in the wilderness for longer than expected

  • Knife: for personal protection and overall use

This is a general list, however it is always important to adapt and adjust what you bring on a trail based on your own personal needs. Before venturing on a trail, make sure you have an understanding of your surroundings and let a friend or family member know where you are headed and what time you will return. There is no better feeling than being prepared and felling comfortable in a natural space!
