Adopted Trails

Knollwood Trail
Adopted By:   Ride Nipomo

The Knollwood Trail basically makes a big square, running parallel to Willow Road, Sun Dale Way, Dawn Road, Westwind Way. It is a little over two miles long and has no “trailhead” per se. The trail can be easily accessed from any corner and street parking is available on Westwind Way and Knollwood SRASun Dale Way.  Most of the trail is relatively flat, although there are a couple of small grades. It is mostly sandy soil and is lightly shaded by eucalyptus trees overhead.  It’s pretty impossible to get lost. The only place you need to maneuver at all is when crossing Black Canyon Road. There is an opening in the fence on one side and wooden bollards with reflectors on the other side.  Although much of the vegetation along the trail is non-native, there are a few native wildflowers such as blue hyacinth, sky lupine, pearly everlasting, clarkia and California poppies. The Sensitive Resource Area in Black Lake Canyon has a considerable amount of native flora, including coast live oaks, toyon, black sage and California brome. Hummingbirds, goldfinches, juncoes and robins can be spotted in this area.

The Callender Grove Trail is a loop trail that begins at the end of Monadella Lane off Callender Road in Nipomo. It is a little over a mile long and starts as a pedestrian, equestrian and bike trail, but serves only equestrians and hikers after about a quarter of a mile. It has a sandy surface and is a flat, easy walk. You will see some magnificent silver bush lupine, as well as some coyote mint, fiddleneck, owl’s clover and phacelia on your walk if you head out in the spring. You’ll be treated to the temperate climate of Nipomo and coastal breezes along your route regardless of the time of year.

Vineyard Estates
Adopted By:   Friends of the Vineyard Trail/Parks-4-PupsVineyard Trail

The Vineyard Estates Trail is multi-use, supporting pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists. It is about a mile long and runs parallel to Vineyard Drive just past Bethel Road in Templeton.  If you are heading west, you’ll find parking in a lot with ample spaces on the left hand side just past Semillon Lane before Vineyard heads down to Vineyard Elementary School. The trailhead begins at the parking lot and gently weaves down to Bethel Road amidst beautifully landscaped medians.  It’s a nice place to take a leisurely stroll and dogs are welcome on leash.
