More than 1,300 people turned out at local SLO County beaches today to participate in Coastal Cleanup Day. From 9:00 a.m. to noon today, volunteers collected 4,779 pounds of marine debris, including 3456.5 pounds of trash and 1322.5 pounds of recyclables.  The Cleanup effort stretched over 67 miles, including sites as far north as Piedras Blancas Lighthouse and as far south as Point Sal.

Some of the most unusual finds today included a balloon weather station at the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Preserve, five pounds of fireworks at the Pismo Dunes, a fishing net buoy with Oregon license tags at Montana de Oro, and a 300-pound 5-feet high tractor tire from 24th Street in Cayucos.

This year the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo County (ECOSLO) organized the event for SLO County.  ECOSLO is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the natural environment and human well-being through education, community-based action, and advocacy.
